The great horned owl is one of the many nocturnal owl species which hunts at night. It is a large owl with a magnificent wing span of over 4 feet and stands 2 feet tall.
The appearance of the great horned owl is very majestic, with it's long long tufts of feathers on it's head (these are not ears). It camouflages itself well by blending in with trees with with it's grey, brown, black and white coloration.
Great horned owls have a large range and take up residence in forests. It hunts rodents, squirrels, rabbit, small birds and ducks, but it is most happy when skunk is on the menu. Small prey is eaten whole, then later regurgitates fur and bones which can not be digested. It is easy to determine what an owl has been consuming by observing these "owl pellets." Great horned owls cover a very long range.
