My experience as a Canadian Wildlife Photographer has taught me-there really is no guarantee when it comes to wildlife sightings. Today was one of those days. Last night I made the decision that I would travel to a location I learned had experienced recent Snowy Owl sightings. As a Wildlife and Nature Photographer I always set out hopeful that... today will be the day I get that amazing award wining shot.
I called a friend this morning and we ventured out mid afternoon in search of the magnificent Snowy Owl. The Snowy Owl has always been my favorite owl. So with a renewed determination we set out on our journey. With the hope that today's cold snowy day with bone chilling wind would bring out the snowy. Several hours of driving (until dark) with eyes peeled and spirits high - not 1 snowy insight. After a few hours we finally have a sighting...a pair of crows and a few small fleeting birds in the distance.
I would like to end by saying we photographed some amazing photos but that is not the case. Reminding me how Wildlife Photography is a test of patience and commitment.
The recent sightings of Snowy Owls and Great Gray Owls is a representation of the environmental changes occurring. These raptors home range has traditionally been the frigid climates of Northern Quebec, and Manitoba as well as other northern locations. We should be asking.... what is the appearance of this Bird of Prey in Southern Ontario trying to tell us!
