The red fox is a mammal with an average size of 85-100 com and weighs between 4-7 kg. It's lifespan is 3-4 years in the wild and nearly 12 years in captivity. They are found dwelling throughout Ontario.
Red Fox are omnivore and they have a varied diet. They can be scavengers but prefer a diet of rodents, frogs, snakes, insects and birds, Red fox add to their diet with fruits, nuts, corn and various grasses. They can be found in varied habitats including forests, meadows, pastures farmland, and sometimes more urban areas.
The mating period occurs late in December through to late March. They give birth to 5 kits and in early fall the kits go out on their own. Red fox often mate during their first winter. They have many predators which significantly reduces fox populations. They are prone to several diseases which threatens their survival.
Fox are very helpful in reducing rodent over-population.
