The Great Horned Owl is one of the many nocturnal owl species. It is a large owl with a magnificent wing span of over 4 feet and stands 2 feet tall.
The appearance of the great horned owl is a majestic sight, with its long tufts of feathers on its head (these are not ears). It camouflages itself well by blending in with trees with its grey, brown, black and white coloration.
Great Horned Owls have a large range and take up residence in forests. They hunt rodents, squirrels, rabbit, small birds and duck-like-birds. They are most happy when skunk is on the menu. Small prey is eaten whole, and then the owl later regurgitates fur and bones which can not be digested. It is easy to determine what an owl has been consuming by observing these "owl pellets." Great Horned Owls cover a very long range.
