The Elusive Bobcat on the Prowl- Bobcat Facts- Wildlife Education Series

The “Elusive Bobcat on the Prowl” is part of the Canadian Wildlife Fine Art Collection of Shelley Myke.

The Bobcat is named after their short stubby “bobbed tail.” Their tufted ears, large paws and long legs are much like their larger cousin, the Canadian Lynx.  Bobcats are the most abundant wild cat in the United States, with the largest territory of all North American wildcats. Their lifespan is 10-12 years in the wild. Their head and body length measures 26-46 inches in addition to their 4-7 inch bobbed tail. Their average weight is a mere 11- 30 lbs. Their fur is brownish red or brown, and they have a white underbelly. This wild cat is approximately twice the size of an average domestic cat.

Rarely seen by humans these wildcats are solitary nocturnal mammals. They inhabit most of North America in forested, swamp and desert regions. Bob cats are amazing hunters that can capture prey much larger than themselves. They can leap up to 10 feet to pounce on their prey. Bobcats are elusive and nocturnal, so they are rarely spotted by humans. Although they are seldom seen, they roam throughout much of North America and adapt well to such diverse habitats as forests, swamps, deserts, and even suburban areas.

The Female Bobcat gives birth to 1-6 kittens in secluded dens. The young remain with their mother for 9 months to 1 year. During this time they are taught to hunt for their own survival. Sadly bobcats are still being trapped for their spotted soft fur. I encourage you to advocate to prevent this unnecessary cruelty.
